Beer+Here+Now

Grab a glass and slap the tap. Oktoberfest may be over in Germany, but the Bay Area’s still pouring a heady assortment of ales, lagers, and porters. Here’s to beer!

Rock the Haus

"The first rule of Tourist Club is you don't talk about Tourist Club." While the location of this Bavarian-style Tourist Club Mount Tam Marinlodge in Mount Tamalpais State Park isn't a total secret, the club can be very hard to find—but it's worth it when you do. From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends the club sells pitchers of delicious Austrian beer to the public. The catch? Sweat. It's a 15- to 20-minute hike to the lodge. And there are multiple trails. One starts at the end of Ridge Avenue in Mill Valley. That's all we're saying. Remember Rule #1.

The Tourist Club is open this Saturday, but closed to the public this Sunday and the second Sunday of every month for maintenance.

Berkeley Hills and Hops

A pedal-pounding bike ride in the Berkeley Hills is a good way to work up a mighty thirst. We like the 11-mile loop that begins at Wildcat Canyon Road's Inspiration Point and offers gorgeous views of San Pablo Reservoir and Mount Diablo. (For directions see below.) After all that cycling, you'll be ready for a cold reward. Downtown on Shattuck, across from the BART station, Jupiter microbrewery is waiting to pour you a glass of 20-ounce goodness. Grab a seat in the heated outdoor beer garden and try one of their IPAs or a refreshing pomegranate cider. Just remember to hydrate first.

Alternative: For a shorter paved option, bike the Nimitz Way Trail four miles until you hit the gate. Turn around and ride back the way you came.

Driving from Highway 24 East, exit at Orinda. Turn left at Camino Pablo and follow it for two miles, until you hit Wildcat Canyon Road. Turn left and go 2 1/2 miles to Inspiration Point. Park. Bike paved Nimitz Way Trail for 4 miles. Continue on dirt San Pablo Ridge Trail for 1 mile. Turn Left on Belgum Trail and descend 1 mile. Turn left on Wildcat Creek Trail and follow for 2 miles. Go left at Havey Canyon Trail junction then right on Conlon Trail. Take this for 2 miles back to Nimitz Way, turn right and follow the road back to your car.

City Brews

The Giants are done, but the pitchers are still going strong at their neighbor, the 21st Amendment Brewery; favorite pints include three IPAs and Watermelon Wheat. Or quaff a cold one in the Haight's best beer hall, Magnolia Pub & Brewery; their 1903 Victorian survived both the '06 'quake and the Summer of Love. We love their cask-conditioned Prescription Pale. For a taste of the Old World, stop by Suppenküche in Hayes Valley; treat yourself to a stein of Ayinger, the seasonal Oktoberfest Märzen, on tap through the end of the month.

21st Amendment Brewery, 563 Second St., SF (415-369-0900). Magnolia Pub & Brewery, 1398 Haight St., SF (415-864-7468). Suppenküche, 525 Laguna St., SF (415-252-9289)

TIP: Inspired? How about brewing your own at home? You can buy all the supplies you need at San Francisco Brewcraft. They also offer a home brewing class (for first-timers) every Monday night at the store, hosted by Griz, the owner. Cheers!
