The artsy town of Ojai is in a valley better known for spa retreats than bike rides, yet one of the best ways to relax in the region is on two wheels. Join locals on a favorite trail that starts from town, rises to panoramas and goes down smooth. Depart from North Signal Street for a moderate ascent to Shelf Road, a well-trodden 1.5-mile winding and mostly level fire road that offers a bird’s-eye view of the avocado and citrus-filled valley as well as the impressive Topatopa Mountains. At Gridley Road, you can flip it and return the way you came gaining a different perspective on this beautiful valley. Back in town, keep your eyes peeled for tiny Ruben’s Burritos & Catering, a local gem where low prices meet large quantities. For some serious spice try the Azteca burrito. Olé, Ojai!
TIP: Bike rentals are available at Bicycles of Ojai (108 Canada Street, just off Ojai Avenue). Call ahead (805-646-7736) to make sure your size is available.
