The seaside town of Avila Beach near San Luis Obispo is the site for a Stage 5 Tour of California sprint finish. For the casual rider there’s no need to “turn yourself inside out” to bike in these parts. Take the cruiser on an 8-mile (round-trip) ride along the Bob Jones City to the Sea Bike Trail and Avila Beach Drive to the Port San Luis Pier. The paved bike path weaves past live oak groves and apple orchards before joining San Luis Obispo Creek as it flows toward Avila Beach. Pedal past the namesake golf course and reach the beach, then continue west on the oceanfront along bike-friendly Avila Beach Drive; the wooden pier is at the west end of San Luis Obispo Bay (you’ll hear the seals barking on nearby docks). Return the way you came. Now that’s SLO-motion.
BONUS: Spin by the clutch of wine tasting rooms in Avila Beach, including Wood Winery (480 Front St.) right on the boardwalk. Their Syrah pairs perfectly with the ocean-view patio.
Start from the Bob Jones Trail parking area on Ontario Rd. near the 101 Fwy. (map). Bike 2.5 miles to the other end of the bike trail at Avila Beach Drive. Turn right and bike 1.5 miles along the road to the Port San Luis Pier (Harford Pier).
