Want to impress the guests without leaving San Francisco? A panoramic vista is just a hill away. The short ascent to the top of Bernal Hill in Bernal Heights Park delivers a 360-degree Bay Area picture: Mount Diablo, Mount Tam, the Golden Gate, and both Bay Bridges, along with some of San Francisco’s bright houses, gridded across the landscape like patchwork on a festive quilt. Take a lap around the old antenna tower crowning the hilltop before descending an unmarked stairway southwest off the hill. It leads to the Bernal Heights Mini-Park Slides, a pair of metal side-by-side undulations that are sure to keep things merry.

TIP: Continue your urban wander down to the Mission, where you can break at Rosamunde Sausage Grill (2832 Mission Street) for a pint from their impressive beer menu. The subtly sour Rodenbach Grand Cru pairs nicely with a knockwurst.

Bernal Hill is located at the top of Bernal Heights Blvd. in San Francisco. Street parking is available. Climb the summit, then descend the stairs west of the gate, where Bernal Heights Blvd. ends, continuing one block past to the mini slides at the intersection of Esmeralda St. and Winfield St. Keep downhill until you reach Mission St. A right on Mission will take you to Rosamunde. Bernal Heights Park and Rosamunde’s restaurant patio are dog-friendly!
