Nestled in San Francisco’s Marina district is a blooming garden with benches for taking in quiet city views. The Fort Mason Community Garden inside Fort Mason’s gates is an enclave of over 100 plots curated by locals. There’s an eight-year waiting list for a plot here, but you don’t have to pick up a hoe: the garden is open to visitors. Potent herbs and chirping sparrows add to the sensory experience. Sit on a bench beside a birdhouse, among California poppies and a few palm trees. San Francisco sprawls to the west, and the domed Palace of Fine Arts looms at the edge of the vista.

BEER BONUS: Not far from Fort Mason in the Presidio, Fort Point Beer Co. is brewing small-batch excellence, and you can taste some of it not far from where it’s brewed, at Off the Grid: Picnic at the Presidio (Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). This Sunday (Mother’s Day) they’ll be serving two of Fort Point Beer Co.’s German-inspired creations, Westfalia and KSA. Sprawl out on the plush lawn and indulge in this food-truck fantasyland, with live music and good libations. Ich liebe dich, Mama!

The Fort Mason Community Garden is located inside Fort Mason at Bay and Franklin Streets. Enter the gates and make a left at the first stop sign to find the gardens. No dogs. Off the Grid: Picnic at the Presidio is located on the Main Post Lawn in the Presidio, Sundays 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., rain or shine. Dog-friendly!
