For some of the best views in San Francisco step up to a classic. The Vallejo Street steps feature iconic sites, from Coit Tower to the Transamerica Pyramid to the Bay Bridge and the East Bay just beyond. The steps begin at Mason Street and end at Jones Street. You’ll have the option of ascending three different staircases—a wide central one and two steeper and narrower sets—punctuated by gardens cared for by neighbors and wooden benches that make mini sanctuaries for enjoying a little downtime and contemplation. Take your time on this uphill climb or sweat it out by powering up the steep steps, triple time! At the top, you’ll find a small overlook with a larger-than-life view of the Bay Area. This is how you earn the title Stair Master.
BONUS: Finish things off with a beer at La Trappe Cafe (800 Greenwich St.). This warm and sophisticated bistro and lounge has a complete draft list straight from Belgium. Head down the spiral staircase to the intimate cellar and feel transported to Flanders with just a sip of the Affligem and a taste of the Mussels Marinière!
Here’s a map to the start of the stairway. It’s dog-friendly! No dogs at La Trappe.
