Hiking the redwoods at Huddart Park in San Mateo County
Just minutes west of the tony town of Woodside in San Mateo County, 900-acre Huddart Park has over 24 miles of trails that put redwoods on parade. For a moderate out-and-back featuring stately redwoods, jump onto Dean Trail for a 4-mile hike under the cover of countless madrone and bay trees, and reams of second-growth redwoods.
Picnic tables and benches make ideal areas to relax. Cross a campground service road and pick up directly across the street, continuing for 1.9 miles (there are several junctions; stick to the signage). The end of Dean Trail is marked by a signpost. Return the way you came.
Coming from the north or south on I-280, take the Woodside Rd. (Hwy. 84) exit westbound and proceed approximately 1.5 miles through the town of Woodside, then turn right on Kings Mountain Rd. Proceed up the hill to the main park entrance and continue to the Zwierlein Picnic Area parking lot. Follow signs for Dean Trail (to the left) to hike the 0.2 mile to the beginning of Dean Trail. No dogs.
