Billy Goat Beacon
Sunset Stroll at Billy Goat Hill in San Francisco
Located just above Noe Valley and below Diamond Heights, Billy Goat Hill is a neighborhood park with steep wooden stairs and the winding Beacon Trail connecting Billy Goat Hill with Walter Haas Park. Visit both parks and take in a sunset view on an easy 0.75-mile (round-trip) stroll.
Start climbing the steep dirt trail at the bottom of Billy Goat Hill. Halfway up you’ll reach a lookout point with a eucalyptus tree. For years a rope swing hung from the tree, but due to safety issues, it was cut down. The swing, beloved by locals, is replaced nearly every week, only to be cut down again. But even when there’s just frayed rope ends, the views of San Francisco’s rolling hills and the Bay Bridge stretching all the way to Oakland are enough of a thrill.
Pause at the lookout point before making your way up the trail, across the street, and up a forested path that ends at Walter Haas playground. The park features gated play areas where dogs can play off-leash, and benches made for taking in sunset views. Sit back and watch the clouds turn the color of cotton candy as the city’s skyscrapers start to twinkle.
Beacon Trail starts at Laidley St. and 30th St. Dog-friendly!
